In the post-apocalyptic world of terra laesa, most of the remaining population of Earth has fled the surface to live on islands in the sky. In Antarctica, a deserted high-tech research base may have answers, but the trip is perilous. Meet three adventurers crazy enough to brave dilapidated barracks on a frozen continent to retrieve not only whatever relics and data are still intact but also samples of araneida aeris, a genetically engineered spider that spins incredibly strong and conductive copper webbing. The catch? Due to the alcoholic ichor used to adapt the arachnids to the cold, the local chinstrap penguins, a loud, quarrelsome flock, have become addicted to the toxic and intoxicating spider meat.
